“Are human hair wigs better than synthetic wigs?” Many people asked.
In my opinion, not necessarily. The quality of human hair wigs varies greatly. A Bad human hair wig is not worth bothering with. A cute, nice synthetic with a hand-tied (monofilament) top has the benefits of never needed to be styled and easy care. The downside of a synthetic is that it doesn’t stand up to heat. You can’t use a curling iron or blow dryer on it without melting the fiber. You also can’t open an oven door or even cook over a hot stove with steam coming up. Short styles look better in many synthetics because the neckline clings to your nape and doesn’t stick out like human hair can. IF you want human hair, you need to look for European hair which comes in a range of colors. Even when it has been processed, it’s usually a better bet because the color didn’t start out black and then need to be bleached up to whatever color you want, damaging the hair in the process. Of course if you want black hair, then you’d be fine with either Indian or Asian black hair as it is much less expensive. One of the things to watch out for is hair that tangles excessively. Often, you won’t know this is an issue until you’ve had the wig for a while. Matting or excessive tangling happens because the hair has had it’s cuticle removed but the hair is turned – not all the hair is going the same direction and this causes the underlying layers of cuticle to get roughed up and start to catch on the cuticle of the hair beside it. It can become a huge matted mess.
The only way to avoid that is to find a provider that has unprocessed hair – cuticle still intact and tied only on the root end so the hair is all going the same direction. In a vacuum or suction wig like Freedom, the hair is always implanted in the same direction the hair grew out of the donor’s head. Our hair is not tied, but implanted. However, if all you need is a short-term wig, synthetic is easy and fun and you can afford to have several.
