Tammy Hanson can’t wait to head to England in October to compete to be one of the best hairstylists in the world.
Hanson is a recent graduate of the hairdressing program at Vancouver Island University, where she graduated two years ago at the top of her class.
She currently works at Violet Hair Lounge on Richard Street.
Hanson won top honours this week in the New Talent category in a Canada-wide hair-colour competition that was sponsored by Goldwell, an international hair colour company head-quartered in Germany.
The honour was based on a photo Hanson sent in as part of the competition, highlighting the hairstyle she completed on her friend Sarah Hooten. Hanson attempted to reflect Canada’s Northern Lights using Goldwell colours.
"It’s a huge win for me so early in my career and I hope it will go a long way to building up my client base in the city," Hanson said. Entrants were judged on numerous specifications such as colour technique, product use and aesthetics in their submitted photos.
Goldwell will fly Hanson and Hooten to London in October to compete in the New Talent category in its Global Colour Zoom live competition, where she will be asked to replicate the look in her winning photo in front of a panel of judges.
"If I win the international competition, I will be part of Goldwell’s creative colour team that will set the trends for the next year," she said.
"I would still work and live in Nanaimo, but I expect that there would be lots of travelling involved."
