The instruction for clip in hair extension

Types

Decide what color clip-in hair extension you need. Bring a compact mirror with you when purchasing wefts or pre-made clip-ins, since this will make it easier to compare the color of the extension against your natural hair. Keep in mind that you can dye human hair extensions as well. It is always helpful to ask for a professional stylist’s opinion before purchasing extensions, since human hair wefts can be expensive.

Choose between pre-made clip-ins or weft extensions. With pre-made clip-ins, the package will typically come with several pieces of hair at varying lengths to produce a more natural look. Each piece will be approximately seven to eight inches wide, with three or four snap clips at the top of the wefts to attach them to your hair. You can also purchase Remy hair wefts and buy the snap clips separately. The snap clips have holes in the sides and along the top, making it possible to sew them into the track of a weft. The track is the ribbon-like piece at the top of the weft that the hair is attached to. It’s best to use weaving thread when sewing the clips into the track instead of thin, breakable house thread. Attach the clips with the teeth pointed outward. This is a much more inexpensive method than purchasing pre-made clip-ins, which can cost hundreds of dollars.

Attachment

Sectioning off your hair is important when attaching clip-in extensions. Use a comb to section off the top quarter portion of your hair all around your head, fastening it with a clip. Never attach extensions any higher than this section, since this hair is what hides the clips. Once you have secured the top section, section your hair again about three-quarters of the way down your head. To help create a stronger base or anchor for the clip, backcomb the roots of your hair with a comb a little bit. Johnny Lavoy, a hair stylist for Ford Models, recommends spraying the teased root with a small amount of hairspray to "lock in [the] anchor."

Next is the easy part. Simply clip the extensions along the teased roots as if you were clipping a barrette into your hair. Once you have finished clipping one extension in, section off another 2-inch chunk of hair, working your way up the back of your head, and attach another clip-in using the same root preparation technique. Repeat this until you have reached the sectioned-off hair at the top of your head. When attaching clip-ins, it is helpful to have a friend section off your hair and attach the extensions to ensure that they go on straight.
