It’s the most common question about wigs that I got from our customers: how to decide between synthetic wigs, hair toppers or human hair pieces. This is a topic that everyone covers for awhile. I have more experience with this now than ever before because I actually go back and forth between a human hair piece and a synthetic piece day to day. I’ll go through the pros and cons and hope it will help you make your decisions for your first hair purchase.
No.1 pro of synthetic wigs is the cost. Synthetic hair is much cheaper than human hair because it is manufactured and you don’t have to source it from human hair. If you want to experiment more with your hair but you’re not sure what styles work for you or you want to switch it up all the time, synthetic is really great because you don’t have to dump a bunch of money into one piece. You can get really really good quality synthetic wigs for over $150.
Other pros of synthetics is the fact that they hold their style. It’s styled perfectly when you get it out of the box and it keeps that style no matter what. That is the amazing perk of synthetic hairs as well. Another big perk of synthetic hair is the color and style is very predictable in the sense that you don’t have to worry about the color oxidizing or washing out. In synthetic fiber we have the standard of what those colors look like on the wig and it always looks that way. If you order the same color each time, you will get the exact same color.
Some people would see it as a perk and some people would see it as a con. A lot of women like permatease. Permatease can look really nice if it’s used sparingly. Having permatease of a synthetic wig can really gives you a big hair look. If you really like big hair, it can be harder to find that in human hair compared to synthetic hair because human hair tends to lay pretty flat unless you do some serious upside down.
No.1 con of synthetic hairs is the short life. As a general rule any synthetic piece is expected to last 6 months if you wear it everyday. That’s not a bad thing. Even though it has 6 months of daily wear, it’s not gonna be the same piece by the time you get to the end of 6 months.
Another con is the fact that the majority of them cannot be heat styled. If you put a curling iron or a hair straightener near a synthetic piece, the wig will fry. The fiber will melt together. But all synthetic wigs from UniWigs can be styled with heat. But keep in mind that start out at a very low temp, raise it slowly and don’t heat it overtime. The temp can be 90-140°C. Another point is that you need to be patient. Our wigs are more thicker and longer than others so they need more time. We don’t recommend wig beginners to style it with heat because since it’s synthetic hairs it’s more fragile than human hairs. But if you ask, I’ll say yes it definitely works!
